In the world of racing, "Penske" means performance ... and winning. For good reason. Since 1966, Team Penske has won 44 national championships, 17 IndyCar alone. And last year, Team Penske recorded its second-straight NASCAR Cup Series championship and won its record 19th Indianapolis 500. Those are results that are tough to top.

Our goal at Pit Pass Indy is to give racing fans and insiders view of the exciting world of the NTT IndyCar Series in a fast-paced podcast featuring interviews with the biggest names in the sport. I bring nearly 40 years of experience covering IndyCar and NASCAR, working for such media brands as NBCSports.com, SI.com, ESPN SportsTicker, Sports Illustrated, AutoWeek and SpeedSport. So let's drop the green flag on this episode of Pit Pass Indy. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone from Pit Pass Indy. On this special season of Celebration Edition, we have two of the biggest winners in auto racing in 2024 as our guests, and both are from Team Penske. First up is 2024 NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano, who drove the number 22 Shell Ford Mustang to his third NASCAR Cup Series championship this season, his second in the past three years. After a break, we'll hear from another major winner in 2024. It's two-time and back-to-back Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden, who drove the No. 2 Shell Chevrolet to a second straight checkered flag in the 108th Indianapolis 500 on May 26, 2024. In addition to both driving for Team Penske, these two drivers also achieved glory for their sponsor, Shell. During this special time when we celebrate the holidays, throw another log on the fire, grab another cup of eggnog, enjoy the aroma of the turkey prime rib or ham roasting in the oven, and enjoy this special holiday edition of Pit Pass Indy. First up is my exclusive interview with three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano. Hey, Joey, Bruce Martin. How are you doing? You've been with shell for a long time. Did you realize that when you won the, your second cup series title in 2022, that it would start off a wave of success. That's also included Josef new garden, winning the Indianapolis 500 and back-to-back years team Penske with shells and associate on Ryan Blaney's cup series champion in 2023. And then of course you winning another NASCAR cup series championship. in November 2024. I guess when you really look at that, you're giving Shell a heck of a return on their investment.
JOEY:
Well, it sounds really good to say it like that. It's a team effort between Penske and Shell in so many different levels, right? When you look at the performance side, the lubricants that are developed on the NASCAR side are developed from Shell engineers. You know I I truly feel like it gives us an advantage. Right I mean it we're looking for the all little little thing. Yeah, I feel like that has really helped us. The continuity that's just been there for a long time, right? I mean, you kind of brought up the last three years, but for me, it's been, what, 12, 13 years, I think, driving the Shell Penzo Mustang at this point. Yes. So, you know, there's a lot of brand loyalty and, you know, it helps a lot too. I mean, people come up to me and they see Shell, they think Penske, they think Joey Logano, like that's perfect. That's the way, you know, we want it to be a long-term relationship like that. And, you know, when you look at the the relationship in general, I believe that, you know, double check me on this. I believe it started back in 83 with team Penske on the IndyCar side. So, you know, the, the gel Pennzoil relationship with Penske goes far deeper than, than really the last three years, but definitely the last three have been very solid and, you know, able to, you know, win a lot together.
BRUCE:
And also Shell's involvement with the Penske Corporation and their auto dealerships with the IndyCar series. They're the prime partner in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. They're also the official fuel of the IndyCar series. And they also supply lubricants and other additives to Team Penske's IndyCar effort. So when you see the bigger picture that Shell is involved with with Team Penske, what are your thoughts?
JOEY:
Yeah, I mean, like I said, it's so deep. The relationship is so much more than just a sticker on the race car, right? A lot of partnerships are more like sponsorships, right, on race cars. But the Shell relationship is a true partnership, you know, like I said, whether it's the performance side or the business side, you know, as you said, with the Speedway, but also, you know, PTL, you know, with the dealerships, as you say. And I'm sure there's a lot more layers to it than even you and I even know. It's definitely been a great partnership back and forth. That's why it's been so long lasting, right? When everyone feels like they're winning on the deal, those are the type of deals that last a long, long time.
BRUCE:
And when you look at Shell's success, Josef Newgarden's played a big role in that. The first driver since Elio Castroneves in 2001 and 2002 to win the Indianapolis 500 in back-to-back years. What does that mean to you as a Shell driver to see your IndyCar teammate have that kind of success with Shell? Yeah.
JOEY:
We want to see our, our cars win, right. We want to see team fancy cars when I was just another layer to it because both of our primary sponsors, you know, or, or gel. So we have that in common even more so. So it's, it's really nice to see that success on that side of it. You know, our, our race cars come out of the same building, right. Now there might be a line where the IndyCar guys are versus the natural guys, but it's the same route. And so, Yeah. That is that to see their success in Indy, right? I mean, that that's their biggest rate by a long shot, right? So they, they base their whole season off of winning the Indy 500 or, or not. So you can imagine to be able to do that two times in a row, the excitement that bring to all of team, right? Whether it's a Napture site or Penske Corp, you know, up in Michigan or all the employees around the world, those wins matter a lot.
BRUCE:
You're very busy obviously before a race and you probably might have had a chance to see some of the 2023 Indy 500 because that one started on time and ended before the Coca-Cola 600 but Josef's second Indy 500 victory you were racing in the Coca-Cola 600 at the time because that race started four hours later which ran into the time that the Coca-Cola 600 would be running. But how excited do you get to be when you see a Team Penske driver challenging for a victory in the Indianapolis 500? Because you know what that race means to Roger Penske.
JOEY:
Oh, we definitely know what it means. And you know, you just hope to see one of them, at least up there, you know, duking it out somehow. And Josef's done it such a great job. It's an old bullpen. That guy's incredible. He's definitely being able to, to maximize you know, his, his opportunity that comes his way on the type of racetracks. And so he's a, he's just a smart racer, right? He's, he's really smart on understanding when to make the moves. And not only is he smart, he's got a ton of gut. Cause if you look at that move, he made, you know, the window, the window race on the outside like that. I, and that, that speed. Whoa. Yeah. I don't think people understand the amount of Cahoney's it takes to make something like that happen. So we were all excited when we watched that. I, you know, the country kind of didn't start yet, but we still had it on TV to watch the end of it. Yeah. So it was definitely really cool to see and be able to pull that one off. And, you know, ultimately, you know, we, we want to try to win both the same day, but yeah, it's happened once before, but we'd like to do it again.
BRUCE:
As far as Joey Logano, you are so identified as the Shell driver. They've been with you for your Daytona 500 victories. They've been with on your car for all three of your NASCAR Cup Series championships. To be able to be closely identified with the sponsor, how important is that to you?
JOEY:
I mean, I think that's key, right? And when drivers go from car to car, or sponsors go from car to car, it's really hard to build that brand identity. And I think right now, when you see, when you hear the number 22, people know who's driving it. When you hear the Shel Penzel car, people know that that's Roger Penfield's car, that's Joey Logano driving it. They know it's Paul Wolf Crew Chief. They know all these things because it's been the same for so long. There's a lot of value in that. And for me, that loyalty means so much. It's hard for me not to go back and think about you know, how I got the ride. And, you know, the position I was in in my life and the position of 22 car was in at the time, you know, they were at the ability. And I was, you know, honestly kind of out on my, my butt, you know, losing my, my ride I had before that then by the grace of God that the 22 opens up and, and I had a few meetings with shell at a few meetings as Roger. And here we are later, you know, 30 plus wins and three championships. It's really been a great, great time to, you know, not only, you know, win those races, but to build those relationships. That's what makes those wins now feel a bit more special because you've been working with the same people for so long.
BRUCE:
When you look at the history of Penske Racing and Team Penske, all those years going all the way back to when it started in 1966, you know there's going to be a chapter on Joey Logano in that history. So how incredibly proud are you to know that you've added a lot of success to that incredible history at Penske Racing?
JOEY:
I mean, just having your name on the list with some of these guys is really cool. It's kind of like you had a pinch yourself kind of moment because it doesn't seem like a, you know, a true story sometimes, you know, especially the way, you know, my career was looking like it was going to go and, and getting the opportunity with the right people and having the right team around you. I mean, that's, that's really what's changed the game for me. So, you know, when you, when you hear it, you know, Donahue and rusty Wallace, Bobby Allison, you know, the list goes on of these guys that, that One, gave us all the opportunity because they helped build the company that we see today. But to try to continue that on for the next generation is something I don't take lightly. We talked about the loyalty that Shell had, but the loyalty that I have to the people I work with as well is just, it As you get older, you realize what those relationships mean and how you really want to win together. That means more to me than ever.
BRUCE:
Speaking of relationships, it seems like the Shell partnership, yes, it is business, but it also seems like a lot of it is you've gotten to know the Shell people like family. And how important is that when your work relationship is that good?
JOEY:
Like I said, that's what makes the wins even more special. Yeah, I feel like my first championship I was excited for me and I was young, uh, and I feel like, you know, probably got our last championship. She was fun because I feel like we, I want it for other people, right? Once you win your first championship, you realize the impact it makes on so many people's life. Um, and once you realize that your perspective changes a lot on why you want to win the championship and When you have the relationship that I have now, a lot of people have worked in that company for a long time. You don't win it just for you anymore. You know, it's just as exciting to me to see other people really excited. That matters more than ever.
BRUCE:
And speaking of excitement, how great is it to go into an offseason, especially around the holidays, as the most recent NASCAR Cup Series champion?
JOEY:
Yeah, I mean, that's the goal, right? That's what you shoot for. So it's nice to be honest with you. The feeling is great. The feeling doesn't last long because you're we're all wired to what's next. What's next? What's next? What's next? You can't get too caught up in what we did. We still gotta stay focused on what we wanna do. And what we wanna do is do it again next year. So it's pretty much straight back to work, right? We had some fun after the race, don't get me wrong. We had some fun with our award ceremony and everyone gets to celebrate together. Cuz it's important for all of us to celebrate cuz that's what we work to do. But we can't, as Roger said, you can't trip on your press book. And we got to, you know, pay out the wind fuel.
BRUCE:
And finally, how often do you get a double take when a customer pulls into a shell to fill their car up with fuel and at the pump next to him is Joey Logano filling his car up with shell fuel?
JOEY:
It's usually a double take and then I don't know what to do. My favorite is when they come up and they say, you look like Joey Logano. I said, well, I am. And then they don't believe me. That's the best. They're like, no, you're not. I'm like, okay, whatever you say.
BRUCE:
Those are my favorite ones. Not only is he sponsored by Shell, he uses Shell just like a lot of us do. It's great gasoline. But hey, it's great that they've had this streak of success and you're a big part of it. And I really do appreciate you taking some time out to give me a call.
JOEY:
Absolutely. Thanks for having me on. It's been a great partnership and we look forward to continuing it for many years to come.
BRUCE:
Yes, and good luck in the 2025 Daytona 500. Absolutely, we'll be ready. Okay, thank you. We'll be right back to Pit Pass Indy after this short break. Welcome back to Pit Pass Indy. IndyCar is one series where winning the Indianapolis 500 is bigger than winning the season championship. After winning his first Indy 500 in 2023, our next guest doubled down in 2024, becoming the first driver to win back-to-back Indianapolis 500s since Elio Castroneves in 2001 and 2002. It's Josef Newgarden, whose Christmas came on May 26th when he battled Padua Ward all the way to the checkered flag, making the race-winning pass in Turn 3 on the final lap at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I caught up with Newgarden just a few days ago for this exclusive Season of Celebration interview for Pit Pass Indy. Going back to Joey Logano winning the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series Championship in a shell car. Then you go into 2023, Josef Newgarden wins the first of two Indianapolis 500s in the shell car. The end of 2023, Ryan Blaney, who has shell associate sponsorship and shell lubricants in his car, wins Roger Penske's second straight NASCAR Cup Series Championship. Then in 2024, you become the first back-to-back winner of the Indianapolis 500 since Elio Castronevas in 2002. And then the year wraps up with Joey Logano winning another NASCAR Cup Series championship, his third with a Shell sponsorship, and his second in the last three years. So in some ways, I guess you could say that Shell has really fueled the success at Team Penske.
JOSEF:
Well, it's been a phenomenal run for all of us together, and I think we're all excited about what we've produced. But this is racing. You don't always have these These great stretches, you know, sometimes sometimes you hit a valley and you know, sometimes you can ride a peak for. longer than you feel like you could. And this last stretch has been nothing but extraordinary, nothing outside of extraordinary for all of us. And Shell's support has been tremendous across the board for Team Penske. We love them as a partner. We love their mission. And certainly on the IndyCar side, to be able to carry the banner for them as we've introduced the 100% renewable fuel, it's been a great story to tell. Sort of a fairytale ending when you look at the 500 specifically.
BRUCE:
Also, the associating of Shell with the Penske Corporation. They're in all of the Penske dealerships. They're in all of the fleet at Penske Truck Rental. They're used throughout, up and down, throughout the list of Penske Corporation businesses. The Shell Pecten is official partner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. You see it as the race goes on because it's widely displayed. And when you have that type of honor of representing that company, you probably realize that there's a lot that comes with that. What do you feel representing Shell?
JOSEF:
Well, it's been a great honor for me to drive the Shell car. And, you know, we finally converted to the Indy 500 win in 2023, and we were able to continue that in 2024 with the same livery and the same messaging, you know, with Shell bringing 100% renewable fuel to the IndyCar Series Championship. And I've always loved the icons of IndyCar, including the famous yellow submarine that Rick Mears drove. And I feel like we've been able to create our own stamp on time with the shell car that I drove the last two years. So I'm incredibly proud of that. And I want to keep that. Moving forward in the right way, we're very focused on 2025. And we'd love nothing more than just to add to the small collection that we've been able to produce so far.
BRUCE:
This may be an unfair question, because you do represent a lot of different sponsors. You have a lot of different liveries, as we call paint schemes in IndyCar. But you got to admit, that Shell livery is pretty spectacular. Is it fair for me to ask you if that's your favorite livery?
JOSEF:
Well, we do have, you know, great strength across the board at Team Penske. I have the good fortune of representing a lot of fantastic companies, you know, including Estemo and PBG Paints. And you know, I, I like every car I get to drive. I feel like I've, I've had an all-star lineup in my career at team Penske with, with the cars that I've been, uh, allowed to, to get behind the wheel of, but, you know, certainly driving the shell car in Indianapolis and winning back to back with this particular paint scheme with shell has, you know, it hits differently and, you know, there's, there's no, there's no greater mountain top and IndyCar than, than winning the Indy 500. So I, I, I'm certainly sentimental about it. I think all of us on the team, you know, hold a very special place for that car in our hearts now.
BRUCE:
With all the success that you've had with Shell, do you think it's almost become an expectation that you got to do that every year?
JOSEF:
Well, probably at the moment it's an expectation. You know, you come If you come back into the 8500 as the back-to-back winner and there's nothing that's really satisfying outside of winning the race again, the reality is that's going to be incredibly difficult. The numbers are not on our side. Statistically, it's a very low probability that we'll be able to win it three times in a row. that doesn't mean we're not gonna come in with the same great effort that we always do and put everything into it. I do believe we can win it three times in a row. It's just a matter of if things fall our way again in succession and three times in a row would be certainly very special and it would be unprecedented. It's never happened and when you come across something like that at the 500, it's very rare.
BRUCE:
Have you gotten to know a lot of the Shell people, almost like an extended part of the family?
JOSEF:
Oh, definitely. I've loved my time with the Shell Corporation. Certainly, I think all of us at Team Penske, we work together as one team, and Shell's a big part of that. There's a great collaboration across the board, whether it's on our racing program or it's what we're doing in the showroom on the Penske. on the PPG, sorry, sorry, the, why is the name, PAG side, or if it's on the logistics side of the company, Shell is producing for us in a lot of different ways, and we're trying to move the ball forward together constantly. And I think we've had a lot of success up to this point, and right now we're squarely focused on how do we continue this success and build on it. You know, it feels like family working together with everyone, and we'd like to keep that environment for the foreseeable future.
BRUCE:
Also, Shell, from a competitive standpoint, provides the team with lubricants that are cutting-edge lubricants that may not be what other teams are able to get, but it's one of the things that helps Team Penske have an advantage on the track, and how important are those?
JOSEF:
Well, it's certainly a 360 approach when it comes to Shell, and you have to have every detail Absolutely perfect at Indianapolis to find success. You can leave no stone unturned and, you know, fuel is a big component of it, but we share that component with the rest of our competitors. We're all running on 100% renewable fuel, thanks to Shell, but certainly a differentiator for us is the lubricant side and what we're able to push development-wise. With our gearboxes and our drivetrain and how efficient we can make every part in the car, it all adds up. And the more perfect you can build a race car around Indy, the simpler it is to do your job as a race car driver. So they provide a tremendous advantage for us across the board.
BRUCE:
So we have to bring Joey Logano into the conversation because he's the Shell-sponsored driver in NASCAR. He's had that since he joined the team in 2012. But how excited were you to see him in the championship race He got into it rather interesting circumstances, because originally he didn't make the round of eight, but after one of the cars that did was found to have failed tech, he was back in. Once he got in it, he won the first race of the round of eight, which put him into the championship four. And then team Penske just seems to have a fantastic strategy for a winner take all championship race. He was able to once again win that second time since 2022. How excited were you that day to just see Joey be able to seal the deal with shell and team Penske?
JOSEF:
Well, Joey, certainly no stranger to closing. And, you know, he, he closed in great fashion at Phoenix this year for, for the NASCAR championship. And it's always exciting for us on the team when we have, you know, people in the fight, you know, and, and to go into the championship for with the team Pesky NASCAR program and to have, you know, at basically a 50% shot, um, with our, with our two drivers, it was, you know, it was a fun rate to sit down and watch and to, and to cheer on my teammates and, and Joey, you know, closed in great fashion and, um, certainly was excited for the whole organization for Joey, for, for shell, you know, it really has just been, um, kind of a tremendous run for everybody. You know, we couldn't have imagined that you could string this many results together in the session. And I'm sure, you know, everybody that was watching, whether it's on the Team Penske side or the Shell partnership side, they were, you know, very thrilled with the result.
BRUCE:
And how much time do you really get to interact with the NASCAR drivers? I know tonight's the Christmas party. You'll get to see him there. But what's the interaction like with the other drivers at Team Penske?
JOSEF:
It's one of the fun things of being a part of Team Penske is that we have multiple programs. So whether it's on the Porsche side or the NASCAR side or it's the IndyCar program, you know, you're constantly having somebody to cheer for and also bounce ideas off of. So we We all stay pretty close together. We're all busy, we're all moving in different directions, but we have these moments where we come together as a team and we get to share ideas and stories and everybody gets along in great fashion. So it's an enjoyable ingredient to the team. We're not just running one program, but we have a global program. So you feel connected to the global motorsport space all the time and you always have you know, someone to cheer for or someone to, you know, someone to collaborate with, which I think strengthens all our programs.
BRUCE:
And do you see where you and Joey have a lot of similarities in the fact that, for lack of a better term, you were both child prodigies of racing? A lot of us had heard about Joey Logano well before he got a chance to be a teenager that was going to race in NASCAR. We'd heard about him all the way through virtually the beginning of his racing career. We'd heard about Josef Newgarden well before you were able to come up to IndyCar. So in a lot of ways, do you share that mutual experience that there's a lot of similarities between the two of you?
JOSEF:
I got to think there's some similarities between Joey and myself. He's a great competitor. I think he's a really great guy. He's got a beautiful family. But I think he was a lot hotter prospect than myself when he was coming up. He certainly was. He was the talk of the motorsport space from a very, very young age, much more so than myself. But I enjoy being able to be his teammate and to learn from him, to cheer him on. It's one of the benefits of being I think compared to a lot of others on the grid and those relationships that we've built because of it, it's something that I cherish.
BRUCE:
And I know earlier this week, you spent time with the new partner at IndyCar, Fox Sports, making some commercials. They are really all in on promoting IndyCars, the new television partner beginning next season. What was that experience like?
JOSEF:
Well, from from my vantage point, I think Fox has already hit the ground running when it comes to 2025. You know, there's not been a lot of prep time for everybody, but we're coming in with with full force. And I think Fox will be pivotal in our championship and what IndyCar represents and the story that we're going to be projecting. I think they will They will do our championship justice. I think they will show our stories in a great way and they'll bring it to a wider audience. And I cannot wait to really get started in St. Pete and to continue this story for years to come. I couldn't be more excited about what they are doing and being partnered with them.
BRUCE:
And when you see the cross promotion they've been able to do with IndyCar on their NFL telecast, their college football telecast, how proud are you to see that? Because a lot of times people have thought that's exactly the type of promotion and marketing that IndyCar needs.
JOSEF:
Well, for us right now, it's a dream scenario. Fox is a tremendous TV partner, and I think they will operate for us in true partnership fashion, where they're going to listen and collaborate and try and extend the rest of their family for us to tell our story in IndyCar. And I think they're going to do it better than we've seen in a long, long time. So it's a dream scenario, and I can't wait to see the full breadth of what we put together.
BRUCE:
And just wrapping up, this is the time of year where you celebrate the holidays. You also put a close to 2024, but I'm sure you're already looking ahead to 2025. And just what are some of the things you can do this time of year to really prepare, get off the ground and victory lane and go win another championship?
JOSEF:
Well, it's an exciting time. I, you know, I, I've, I'm really in the same spot. I felt like I was 12 months ago. I've got, One of the best teams around me in the world, if not the best, it's subjective, but I feel extremely confident in my group and especially the two-car side. I think we have still yet to reach our potential, which is always encouraging. you know, when you when you sort of hit your ceiling, then you you worry about where else can you go? And I think we're pretty far away from where our ceiling is located at. So, um, that gives me great energy and hope for 2025. And we're already, you know, knee deep in the details trying to to figure out where we can be a little bit stronger. I'm looking personally at my program and calendar wise, what I need to do to create good buffers and time efficiency. And on the team side, we're going through every detail on the card to make sure that we can be that little bit stronger in 2025. So I think it's an exciting time and I can't wait to get going.
BRUCE:
And lastly, have you seen renderings of the proposed new car that they're talking about bringing in the IndyCar in 2027? And if so, what are your thoughts?
JOSEF:
I have seen renderings. I think the team is working in great fashion. I think they're doing a good job. I like the direction in the new car. And I think what's the priority right now is the weight. I think that's paramount that we get the weight correct, which is going to be a tough job. You know, weight is probably the trickiest ingredient when you look at the formula of the car and certainly the specification, you know, everything that you reduce weight wise has a cost associated to it. But I think getting the weight in the right window is going to be paramount. And I think IndyCar is pushing as hard as they can to get this formula. as close to perfect as possible, but I'm very encouraged. I think they've got a great team in place, and I believe that we're on the right path and that they're gonna produce a great car for 2027, which I know everybody is excited to see. Will it look different? I mean, it looks different. It looks like a brand new car to me.
BRUCE:
Because I know a lot of people's read the comment that they wanted some of the parts off of this current car to be so that team owners didn't take a financial hit. And I think a lot of people may have overreacted thinking it's going to look the same. And I doubt then that that would be the point of this project. create a car that looks the same as the one we're already running?
JOSEF:
Well, it's a delicate balancing act. You know, you can't always have your cake and eat it too. We've got to come up with a way to create a brand new race car that's innovative, that's forward thinking, but we also can't You know, it can't cost out of control where the teams aren't able to keep up. So there's a balancing act and everything. But from what I've seen in the direction we're going, I think they've struck that balance really nicely. And, you know, to have something new to work with in 2027, it is a new car. It looks different. And I think it's going to be exciting to see who gets on top of it the quickest.
BRUCE:
And you also want to make sure it races well and puts on a great show.
JOSEF:
Absolutely. You know, that's probably the other major ingredient is how does the car perform? And you could argue it's probably the most important ingredient is, you know, how does the car work in race conditions and what type of races it produce? And, you know, IndyCar is very, very aware of all the items that come together to make about a good reality, because at the end of the day in 2027, we want a new car, we want something to work with, but it's got to race just as well as the car that we currently have. So there's a lot of requests on the table. It's hard to get everything just perfect, but I think we're trending in the right direction, and we got a little bit more time to go here.
BRUCE:
Well, Josef, I appreciate you calling, and I'm also going to give you your Christmas gift early. I'm not going to put in any interview requests for the rest of 2024.
JOSEF:
Oh, Bruce, what a day. That is a nice gift. Thank you, Bruce.
BRUCE:
Okay, well, thank you. Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and we'll see you in 2025.
JOSEF:
All right, sounds great. Thanks again, Bruce. All right. See you, man. Merry Christmas. You too. Thanks.
